Woes of An NTU engineering student
Assumptions of an average Engineering student:
1. Prepare Exams and start to get panic 3 weeks before the first paper.
2. During the term, rush miscellanous stuff like fyp, quizzes and a life with family/bf/gf/friends.
3. Selectively do some tougher tutorials during the semester
No one will doubt my above assumptions. But let me tell you, someone like that will not complete within 4 years in NTU CEE.
It's behind everybody's head that we are the dumping ground of the 3 engineering schools though our lecturers don't talk about it. So they fail us like no other people's business. When I get to year 2, I realise there is no such thing as moderations for my CEE subjects as we still take some common year 2 subjects. Y? Because the lecturers think we are not up to standards. Let me tell you about our failure rates.
Structures 1: Not sure but about 80 percent of us take twice to clear it.
Structures 2: 70 percent failure rate
Reinforced Concrete: 70 percent failure rate
Structures 3: very high pass rates because it's matrix and maths
Geotechnical engineering: 70% failure rate
I am now so immune to failing. The above mentioned are only those with top failure rates. There are much more. Why don't the lecturers go and think y is it this way?
Reasons:
1. The lecturers can't teach. They read back the formulas to you from the notes and expect you to solve the toughest questions in examinations.
2. They like to say,"Come and look for me if you got problems." Go and die! I got 8 subjects plus a FYP to handle.
3. Quizzes are suppose to help but they set tough quizzes that flunk everybody. Eg. Geotech. And they have many quizzes in one week.
4. The exam questions are not well done. 1-2 questions should be relatively easy and 1 or 2 question to differentitate the better students. BUT they set all 4 challenging questions.
5. I have a problem.
And now I think I got problems graduating because of their fantastic tough questions. Their ruthlessness in killing us and making us stay back. People stay back 6 years to study in my course. I am really tired in studying for all these nonsense things that I doubt will help me in my development. And for god sake I wont be an engineer. Just let me off I plead you.
